WHY PAY TITHES? Tuesday 3 April

Open Heavens Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye
Memorise: And as l may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. Hebrews 7:9
Read: Hebrews 7:4-9
Have you ever wondered why the Owner of the earth and its fullness (all the silver, gold and natural resources) demands for tithe from you? Is He asking because He cannot do without it? No! He does not need you to feed anyone He wants to feed. He that fed the Israelites for 40 years in the wilderness without their working for one day, and feeds all the animals in the bush on a daily basis surely has not run out of store. His store is inexhaustible. So why then does He ask for your tithe? The most probable reason would be: so that He can be covenanted to blessing you. This is necessary because the devil is always making a case against you night and day, telling Him why you should not be blessed. Paying your tithe is therefore in your best interest and for your good.
Your tithe is the seed to sow in order to continue to earn an income. In every provision, there is a seed that must be sown. Although you have different seeds, tithe is one seed to remind God of your need to earn another income. Your tithe is also an insurance against the devourer. Whether you believe it or not, Satan regularly plans against your income. He releases sickness, accidents, destruction of electrical gadgets by sudden power surge and other forms of losses to waste your income. One step towards accomplishing his purpose is to convince you not to pay your tithe or to defer it to some other time. If you fall into his trap, you will pay dearly for it. Things will be tight, very tight. Unnecessary expenses which could have been avoided will suddenly show up as urgent expenses. It is wisdom to pay your tithe! Paying tithe is also a thing of faith as it is done in obedience to God. This means if you cannot pay tithe, you are in unbelief and disobedience! Do not let any theologian deceive you! If you cannot pay tithe, you are in disobedience and in that state, you cannot enter Heaven. Paying tithes makes you a financial member of God’s kingdom. Paying tithe is the basis for loss recovery promised by God. Without it, you may never recover your losses. Ponder on the benefits of tithing and be faithful to God in tithing.
KEY POINT:
Paying of tithe is not for everyone. If you are among the saved souls that should pay tithe, you are most privileged.
Bible in one year: Isaiah 31-33

  4. Are you sure this was written by Pastor Adeboye?

It is not at all scriptural in any way, shape or form. The New Testament believer has not been given the command to tithe. We are told to give anything and it will be accepted as long as it has been given willingly and cheerfully.

  7. If he actually wrote it then I will be very worried. This is a complete misrepresentation of scriptures from start to finish.

No portion of the bible ever states that God is covenanted to bless anyone because of tithing. That is hogwash. And if tithing can prevent the devil from accusing one before God, where does that leave the blood of Jesus. The last time I checked all believers are able to overcome these accusations of the devil by the blood of the lamb and not by tithing. So where he sourced that is quite doubtful.

If you cannot pay tithe, you are in disobedience and in that state, you cannot enter Heaven. This is even the most shocking of all the statements, linking tithing to salvation.

I would like to ask though, how many of the world’s wealthiest tithe? You are Nigerian and I hear that the richest man in African is a Nigerian called Alhaji Dangote, does he tithe? How about Bill Gates and others like him, do they tithe? So don’t kid yourself because all that he has written has not singular scriptural backing.

    God bless

  8. Tony, you don't need to be worried.

For confirmation of the truth as regards tithing, please read:
    1. Genesis 14 vs 18 - 20.
    2. Malachi 3 vs 10 - 12.

You can also read Mathew 5 vs 17 about Jesus' opinion concerning old testaments laws etc.

May God give you deep understanding of His word in Jesus name.

    1. If people Tithe by law, then we do not follow Abraham's example, because Abraham was not under law.

Malachi 3 says to put the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house. But according to Numbers 18:26 and Nehemiah 10:38, the Levites put a tenth of the tenth into the Storehouse. So those who took the Tithe were those who were supposed to put the Tithe into the Storehouse, but were not.

So Malachi 3 does not condemn those who pay the Tithe, but those who collect the Tithe.

Matthew 5:17 says that Jesus has not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. And that's just what Jesus did. Jesus fulfilled the law on our behalf (Colossians 2:14) because we cannot do it (Romans 8:7-8).

And the law does not even lead to righteousness. Romans 3:20 "No one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin".

Jesus didn't come to make it possible to follow the law. As it says in Galatians 2:21, "if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!" And as it says in Galatians 5:18, "if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law"

But your way puzzles me. You want to follow the law but do not do what the law says, then claim to have deep understanding.

    2. Adekemi:
Please read Bible passages and reflect on them before you cite them. One example: Gen 14:18-20 tells us that Abram tithed from the spoils of war and not from his personal wealth and then gave the rest to the king of Sodom. Tithing was never money. It is unscriptural for Pastor to state that. "if you cannot pay your tithe . . . you cannot enter heaven." You cannot buying heaven with your money, don't let Pastor Adeboye deceive you. The Malachi citation condemns the priests who were "robbing" God for not giving the tenth of all the tithes of the nation of Isreal to the Jerusalem Temple so that the strangers and the poor who visit the Temple store house to meet their needs. You must read the whole Book to understand how the writer get to chapter 3. Let me tellyou that the Book of Malachi was not part of the Western Christendom Bible for more than 200 hundred years. You wonder why!! Because it condemns those Roman Catholic priests.

    3. Believers with old covenant mindset will always think that they are under obligation to tithe. but that is dangerous because Tithing can kill you. you have separated yourself from the Grace of Christ if you still think that you are blessed because of your tithing. In fact tithers are living under a curse. for all who depend on the law to make them right in the sight of God are under a curse. read paul's epistle to the galatians.

  9. Adekemi,

You have only quoted scriptures and completely failed to proof any point. In what way does Abraham’s tithe to Melchizedek in your Genesis 14 reference show that tithing remains a valid practice in today’s church? Is there any verse of scripture that commands us to follow Abraham’s example and tithe?

And you believe Malachi 3 is proof that all must tithe today. Sigh! Please try and read the entire book so that you can see this chapter in its proper context. Again this was not written to the New Testament church but to the Old Testament Jews living at the time of Malachi. It was simply a reminder of Deuteronomy 28; the consequences of breaking just one of the 613 laws of the Old Testament.

What exactly was Jesus opinion on the Old Testament laws? We should tithe, circumcise all our male children and observe the Sabbath? You guys are so quick to produce this verse in support of tithing. What about animal sacrifice, the Sabbath, circumcision, kinsman redeemer etc. Your line of reasoning makes all of these still valid today.

O yes I definitely appreciate your prayer for me to have a deeper understanding of God’s word but it appears you forgot to pray it for yourself as well because it appears you need it as badly as I do.

    God bless.

  10. To tithe today is assinine and complete hogwash, and shows disrespect for the word of God, and a total lack of Biblical understanding of God's word. I dont know how many Christians have been sucked into this stupidity. Most preachers who preach this stuff are only passing along what they have been taught, and have never even taken a basic course in Hermeneutics 101.
Tithing was only for Jews, Gentiles were forbidden to participate, it was only agricultural products & animals, never money, the poor did not participate, and if they tithed and obeyed all 650 Old testament laws, then & ONLY then, would the doors of heaven be open. Believe me,pastors who lay this guilt trip on people will give an account.

  11. People dnt know they can challenge God with their tithe. This is my testimony: on monday morning i started feeling so feverish and had cold so i used some antibiotics and paracetamol but it only got worse. On tuesday i received an alert that my salary has been paid, i went to the bank and made withdrawal and as usual separted my tithe to pay on sunday. Yesterday(wednesday) i was so down and made up my mind to go to the hospital after work today(thursday) but when i wanted to sleep yesterday, the spirit of God ministered to me abt the tithe and i challenged God. I said, God but aw much is my salary, and no matter aw small it is, i neva miss to pay my tithe, then why shld i spend the remaining token on sickness, why shld i spend it on hospital bills. You must heal me God becos i pay my tithe. I woke up on thursday with the same feverish condition but managed to do the things i shld do and started out for work, in the car, i slept for a while and when i came down to walk to my office, i realized i had been healed. I am as good as new. I am nw strong and my appetite has been restored. I did nt even take the usual paracetamol bcos i forgot it @ home. This healing shall be permanent in Jesus name. Amen.

    1. The Tithe did not go to fund the Church. It was welfare that went to those with no income: "the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow" (Deu 26:12).

It's sad that today's Church wants the Tithe from those who used to receive the Tithe.

I ask those who Tithe: Which do you Tithe by, eternal principle or obedience to the law? If by principle, then according to Matthew 23:23 you do not believe Jesus when he says Tithing is a matter of the law. But if people Tithe by obeying the law, then according to Galatians 5:4 you have fallen from grace.

Didn't Jesus set us free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2)? Then why not let people be free to be led, not by rules and regulations, but by the Holy Spirit?

  14. Nigerian Christians are some of the laziest christians in the world. Rather than study the scriptures (the new testament alone would even give them a clearer picture about the law, grace, salvation and redemption), they would rather be spoonfed by men who have special skils in twisting the word of God for their own material gain.

BENEFITS OF UNITY Sunday 27 November

Open Heavens Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye MEMORIZE: “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matt. 18:19) READ: Acts 2:1-4 U nity is a powerful force in the universe. However, uniting against God, His Word or His children causes God to arise in defence of His Name. This is the other side of power of unity. Barring this, unity can accomplish almost anything on the face of the earth. In Genesis 11:5-6, God said that if the people of the earth were left with one language and as united as they were in building the city and tower, they will be unstoppable. The united are unstoppable. Unity is a powerful tool for achieving plans and purposes. But if operated in righteousness within the Christian fold, it is even more powerful. “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it sha

READ: Psalm 18:43-45 W hen Bartimaeus was steps away from his breakthrough, the crowd around him shouted him down. But by the grace of God, he doubled his efforts and cried out the more. He simply told the crowd: ‘If you think you have heard noise you have not heard anything yet’. The reality is that if you need help and send a faint cry in the midst of a crowd, they will want to shut you up. But if your cry is unparalleled, defying the voices of the opposition, there would be a general consensus by the crowd for you to be attended to, at least so that they can have their peace. This season, by the mercy of God, there will be a meeting of the crowd hindering your blessing and their consensus would be that you receive immediate attention. Another lesson from this story is that while peop
