THE BREAD OF LIFE Thursday 6 October

Open Heavens Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35).

READ: John 6:31-35

One of the titles of our Lord Jesus Christ is Bread of Life. “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35). What you eat is very important. It is commonly said, ‘You are what you eat’. In other words, what you eat has a way of determining what you will become. One staple food in most homes today is bread. Both the poor and the rich have access to bread. However, it is the money at your disposal that determines the type of bread you get. ‘Agege bread’ for example, is the one most common with the poor. The nicely sliced ones, in contrast, are the ones eaten by the rich. In spite of the cost, bread is bread, and it is regular food for both the rich and the poor.

During the temptation of Jesus recorded in Matthew 4:3-4, the Lord spoke of two types of bread—the physical and the spiritual. The physical bread is meant to sustain the human body, while the spiritual bread is meant to sustain the spirit. Just as everyone needs food to live daily, so also do saved souls need God’s Word to live a successful Christian life.

One implication of Jesus Christ as the Bread of life is that He is relevant to the spiritual life of every human being. Anyone who wants to attend to his or her spiritual life cannot successfully do so without Jesus. There is no salvation without Jesus. Religion is man’s attempt to cultivate a relationship with God. However, Jesus Christ is God’s way to establish a relationship with man. Man’s attempt will fail because God has his own approved way. Are you interested in serving the true and living God? Do you want your religious commitments and sacrifices to be recognized by God? Then, you must cultivate friendship with Jesus Christ by accepting that you are a sinner, repenting of your sinful lifestyle, asking for His forgiveness and inviting Him into your heart as your Lord and personal Saviour. Jesus Christ is connected with all His creation. He is the Bread of life. If you must have true spiritual life, then you cannot do without Him. Any spiritual activity without Jesus will put you farther away from God. Do you have Jesus? How close are you to the Lord?

KEY POINT
The one who has access to bread but fails to eat will starve to death. Refusing to study the Bible leads to spiritual starvation. Jesus is the only bread that satisfies spiritual hunger. Eat his word everyday.

BENEFITS OF UNITY Sunday 27 November

Open Heavens Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye MEMORIZE: “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matt. 18:19) READ: Acts 2:1-4 U nity is a powerful force in the universe. However, uniting against God, His Word or His children causes God to arise in defence of His Name. This is the other side of power of unity. Barring this, unity can accomplish almost anything on the face of the earth. In Genesis 11:5-6, God said that if the people of the earth were left with one language and as united as they were in building the city and tower, they will be unstoppable. The united are unstoppable. Unity is a powerful tool for achieving plans and purposes. But if operated in righteousness within the Christian fold, it is even more powerful. “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it sha

YOUR VOICE SHALL BE HEARD Wednesday 26 October

Open Heavens Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye MEMORIZE: “As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: the strangers shall submit themselves unto me.” (Psalm 18:44). READ: Psalm 18:43-45 W hen Bartimaeus was steps away from his breakthrough, the crowd around him shouted him down. But by the grace of God, he doubled his efforts and cried out the more. He simply told the crowd: ‘If you think you have heard noise you have not heard anything yet’. The reality is that if you need help and send a faint cry in the midst of a crowd, they will want to shut you up. But if your cry is unparalleled, defying the voices of the opposition, there would be a general consensus by the crowd for you to be attended to, at least so that they can have their peace. This season, by the mercy of God, there will be a meeting of the crowd hindering your blessing and their consensus would be that you receive immediate attention. Another lesson from this story is that while peop
