Open Heavens Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye
MEMORIZE: “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” (Rev. 2:7)
READ: Genesis 3:22-24
A lesson from Christ’s letter to the church at Ephesus is that having an ear is one thing, but hearing with it is another. Some people have ears but they are not better than those who do not have. In fact, there are those who have no ears but they ‘hear’ because they have an obedient heart and are ready to comply with instructions. What God is looking for as proof of having ears that hear, is your ability to heed what the Holy Spirit is saying. Any time you turn deaf ears to what God wants done, it shows that your ears are useless appendages, mere ornaments even. How functional are your ears? Some ears can hear every other sound except that of the Spirit. May the Lord from today open your ears to hear His voice.
Furthermore, access to the tree of life, which was denied Adam and Eve after their fall, is promised in this epistle. Man was created to live forever. The tree of life was planted by God for this purpose. But when man sinned, and lost God’s glory, the Godhead needed to take a crucial decision: should man live forever as originally planned by God, but this time with the consequences of their sin? Should he live forever in suffering, sorrow, pain, sickness, poverty and lack? God who knew that living eternally is only profitable in an earthly or heavenly paradise, decided in man’s best interest, to send Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. He then placed Cherubims to guard the tree of life, keeping man from it and therefore forestalling eternal sorrow. But for this intervention, all who had died would have continued to live for thousands and millions of years with full weight of sin’s consequences. Life would simply have been a nightmare! People would have done everything possible to take their lives but death would have been far from them. However, during great tribulation, those on earth will face such judgement on sin to the extent that people would desire death by all means, but death will be far from them. May you not be on earth at that time! In Heaven, the fruit of the tree of life will be given as a reward to overcomers. The Lord Jesus will personally feed them in Heaven. I will be there. What about you?
PRAYER POINT
Ask God for grace to partake of the tree of life eternally.
